Tea is one of the most consumed beverages in India. Every single person, irrespective of what and where they belong, drinks tea. While there are several varieties and ways in which it is made, it tastes just as good. The history of tea plantations in India goes back to the 1800s, especially 1823 when the British discovered the wild tea plants in Assam. This was exactly where the cultivation started in India and has not seized since then.

According to statistic encircling the tea cultivation, India is believed to produce over 1.1 million tonnes of tea just in the year 2012. The figures of the same have only increased since the same and have gradually made India the second largest tea producers in the world. The country precedes the province of China in tea cultivation. It is the climate and the conditions which make the country a favourable one. The Eastern Himalayas account for one of the best tea plantation areas in India. It is the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas along with the Brahmaputra which are the best areas for cultivation.

Assam

The tea production in Assam is probably the most around the country. While there are several other states which produce tea, Assam accounts for a maximum of its production. It produces around 52% of the total tea production of the country which itself is a lot telling. Some of the major districts in Assam which produce tea include Lakhimpur, Kamrup, Goalpara, Nagaon et cetera.

West Bengal

This state is the second in line when it comes to tea cultivating states in India. The state has specific areas which are best for the tea production which makes it into a lesser amount of production in comparison. West Bengal accounts for producing around 25% of the total tea cultivation in India. Some of the primary districts which produce tea include Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Coochbehar.

Other states

Apart from the above two major tea cultivators, there are some other states which produce tea in scanty. Some of these states include Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya from the Northern part of India while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka from the Southern part of India.
